The atomic weight of lithium is only 6.94, which enables it to carry more charges per unit mass, laying the foundation for the high energy density of lithium-ion batteries.
II. Key Role of Lithium in Batteries
In lithium-ion batteries, lithium ions act as carriers of electric charges, moving back and forth between the positive and negative electrodes to complete the charging and discharging process. During charging, lithium ions are released from the positive electrode material and enter the negative electrode material through the electrolyte; during discharging, the process is reversed. This reversible insertion/deletion process enables lithium-ion batteries to be used repeatedly for hundreds of times.
III. Synergistic Effect of Lithium with Other Materials
The performance of lithium-ion batteries is not only dependent on lithium itself, but also on the combination with positive electrode materials (such as lithium cobalt oxide, lithium iron phosphate, etc.), negative electrode materials (such as graphite), and electrolytes. Different material combinations affect the energy density, cycle life, and safety performance of the battery. Scientists are constantly exploring new lithium compounds to improve battery performance.
